We can not be so indifferent

Silvia Baccaro (mailto:silvia.baccaro@pharma.anbi.ethz.ch)

My name is Silvia and Iīm a phD student of the ETH.

I knew from some people working in the HCI building of Hönggerberg the dramatic event. Yesterday I looked in the ETH Life and in some local newspaper (like 20 Minuten, for example) and I was shocked for the second time after that bad news. I think that the good reputation of the ETH and the promptness of the ambulance (the only two things stressed in the few lines of the ETH Life, whereas there is not one single word about that guy in the local newspaper!) are not at all under discussion. These facts are not the point! I appreciate that nobody mention the name of the guy, starting then to guess the possible personal reasons for such terrible choice, without really know them. It could be a kind of respect for him or for his family, maybe. But the suicide can never be simply a choice, as another one. We can not be so indifferent for something so bad inside our Institute and just forget it. I had the feeling that people donīt want to know and donīt want to speak about that, in the ETH. The life is going on as before, between conference, meeting and so on ... without a single word for him and without a single moment of silence to think.
